Let us commemorate the victims of 1759

Certain opponents of remembrances of the battle on the Plains of Abraham say: ".. The Conquest took place in the destruction, the plunder, the rape and a violence which provoked the death of 10 000 inhabitants, that is 1/7 of the population of News-France". We asked Patrick Bourgeois of the RRQ to give some names of these victims. Regrettably he knows no name or event in which our ancestors were directly involved.

Strangely we do not find victims in the city of Quebec. We consulted the registers of several parishes of the county of Montmagny during the time of the siege from June 23rd till September 18th. Several registers of parishes miss for 1759. Probably they were burned during the hostilities.

Other parishes continue. But the research in St-Laurent (1 death) and in Ste-Famille (9 baptisms and 3 deaths) on the Island of Orléans was not very successful. At St-Francois Île-d'Orléans we found the following note "En cette année 1759 L'isle Dorleans a été évacuée à cause de la guerre et les gens de cette paroisse ont été à St-Augustin depuis may jusqu'en octobre ou ils ont fait baptiser plusieurs enfants et enterrer quelques-uns." [In 1759 the inhabitants of the the parish of the Island of Orléans were evacuated since May until October to St-Augustin because of war. Some children were baptized and a few people burried] Several parishes were thus evacuated. There were no activities in the parishes of St-Jean, St-Pierre and Ange-Gardien. At St-Anne-de-Beaupré it becomes interesting. There are 2 baptisms and 11 burials, among which 8 are clearly identified as victims of the war. We note that the priest of St-Joachim, a so called Réné Portneuf, was massacred by English and 7 other men of Sts-Joachim killed by the English. These men were Pierre Gagnon, Charles [..?], Jean Gagnon, Louis [..?], Michel Magnan, Jean Fortin et Louis Allaire.

At St-Joachim we find only on August 20th, 1759 Augustine Gagnon's baptism between January, 1758 and October, 1759 by the priest Portneuf. However it is added that the priest René Portneuf continued archives until August 23rd, 1759, day when he was massacred by the English being the head of the parishioners of St-Joachim to defend them against the raids and the brutalities of the enemy.

8 victims found a name, but there are still another 9 992 to identify. Without your help we shall never arrive. Do you know plundered parishes and massacred inhabitants? Is there a commemorative tablet in your parish? Have you the names of the militiamen died during the battles? Can you read acts? Because sometimes they are very difficult to decipher. If you have information, please contact us

Thank you very much of your help to commemorate the victims of 1759.
